Raphael Peale was America's 1st professional still life painter. He studied the idea of "illusionism" and "deception" within his paintings. In this particular painting, "Venus Rising from the Sun," the work itself compromises the full spectrum of imitation. Peale uses physiognotrace silhouettes made by mechanically tracing the sitter's features.
